Sam Mankeshaw was one of the first cadets trained at the Indian Military Academy. After graduating, he became a second lieutenant posted to the 12th Frontier Force Regiment in Ferozpur. There he met Sillo Bode, who he later married. In 1942 during World War 2, he was promoted to major and sent to Burma. During the battle of Sitlang Bridge, he was badly wounded but survived the attack and received an award for gallantry.
In 1947 after partition, his colleague Major Yahya Khan tried to convince him to join the Pakistani army but he chose to stay with the Indian Army instead. Mankeshaw’s achievements did not end there.
